Delta stands in a kitchen in old Seattle, in an apartment on a demolition list, in a building where the back door doesn't lock and the alley below is somebody's whole world. Three of the four kitchen lights work. Dad hasn't bought bulbs. One cabinet has no door because he tore it off during a bad night and the two holes in the wall are still there. And she opens that cabinet and feels genuine relief, because inside there are seven cans of vegetables, three cans of tuna and four cans of potted meat.
That's it. That's the hook. And I have not stopped thinking about it.
Food as love language, done properly
Desiree Sandz builds this entire romance on food, and it's the smartest thematic choice in the series. For Delta, food was scarcity. Counting. Rationing. Anxiety in a cupboard. So when she ends up in an enormous, well-stocked, functioning starship kitchen — where the pantry is full and the knives are secured and there is enough — watching her recalibrate is genuinely emotional.
Her first day, she's so anxious to be useful she runs straight to takeoff prep, dives into stowing pots and locking down flatware, and then realises she forgot to introduce herself to a single person. Relatable? Devastating? Both, actually.
She spent her whole childhood making sure there was enough. Now somebody's making sure there's enough for her. Excuse me while I sit down.
The cupcake sequence
There's a night where Delta stays after prep and makes cupcakes. The whole facility starts smelling like them. Crew members drift past the doorway. Grown warriors get their hands smacked for trying to steal one before frosting. And she leaves one on the head chef's desk for the morning.
Reader, I lost it. It's such a small gesture and it carries the entire romance. This is a woman who does not know how to say I like you, so she bakes instead. If you love a foodie romance, if the way to your heart is a hero eating something the heroine made and going quiet — run, don't walk.

Sandz will give you devastating poverty realism in chapter one and pure unhinged comedy in chapter five and somehow both land. That tonal range is the whole appeal of The Deal series.
Spice check
18+ and warm rather than punishing — a hero who takes his time with a woman who has never had anyone take their time with her. The heat here is intimacy-forward. It hits different.

Book 8 of sixteen, and a strong standalone if you want a gentle entry point. Adults only with explicit content. The opening chapters depict childhood poverty, food insecurity, parental alcoholism and property damage during a domestic incident — none of it gratuitous, all of it precise, and it's the emotional foundation for everything Delta becomes.
If you struggle with scarcity content, know that the book's entire arc is the undoing of it. Sandz spends the whole novel filling the cupboard she emptied in chapter one, and the payoff is one of the most satisfying in the series.

The softest book in The Deal series and the one readers keep returning to. If you want comfort romance with real stakes underneath — not saccharine, just kind — this is the pick. Bring snacks. You will absolutely want snacks.
